Garmin dēzl OTR1000 Features—The Tech Behind the Performance

Custom Truck Routing Based on Vehicle Specifications

When hauling oversized loads or navigating tricky roads, every inch of clearance matters. The Garmin dēzl OTR1000 delivers with custom truck routing based on your vehicle’s dimensions, weight, and cargo type. This feature eliminates the guesswork, preventing you from encountering obstacles like low bridges, narrow streets, or weight-restricted routes. By inputting your truck’s specifications, you’ll receive a tailored route, keeping you on highways and roads designed to handle your rig’s specific needs.

The custom routing system also integrates truck-specific POIs (Points of Interest), giving you direct access to truck stops, rest areas, and parking spots. Forget scrambling to find a safe place to rest—dēzl OTR1000 helps plan every detail of your trip for smooth sailing.

Large 10-inch Touchscreen with Split-Screen Capability

One of the standout features of the dēzl OTR1000 is its massive 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen. The screen isn’t just large—it’s designed with truckers in mind. Offering a clear, easy-to-read display, this GPS ensures you can check maps, routes, and notifications at a glance, even during night drives or in bad weather conditions.

But it doesn’t stop there: the split-screen capability allows drivers to view the map on one side while receiving other important information—like upcoming stops or live traffic updates—on the other. This feature is ideal for truckers juggling multiple tasks, keeping critical information at their fingertips without losing focus on the road ahead.

Real-Time Traffic and Weather Alerts

Time is money, especially in the trucking industry. The dēzl OTR1000 makes sure you’re always in the loop with real-time traffic updates and live weather alerts. You’ll avoid unexpected delays caused by accidents, road closures, or extreme weather conditions, and adjust your route accordingly.

With the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, the device automatically updates itself without the need for cables or computers, ensuring you always have the latest maps and traffic data. This feature is a game-changer for long-distance truckers, where detours can mean the difference between an on-time delivery and missed deadlines.

Moreover, voice-activated navigation lets drivers stay hands-free, allowing them to keep their eyes on the road while receiving spoken directions. Combined with driver fatigue warnings that alert you when it’s time to take a break, the dēzl OTR1000 promotes safer driving habits for long-haul truckers.

How to Maximize the Garmin dēzl OTR1000 for Your Business

I have a small trucking business. I use this GPS for the 18-wheeler truck. I have been around a company GPS and this one by far is a great GPS. I have used it thus for 3 months and this GPS has not led me wrong. Especially rolling over the road. This GPS has not brought me down roads that I I would regret later. It keeps you on the familiar trucking routes. The night time lights on it are very visible. You can adjust your route and so many other things. It will let you know where all of the rest stops are all of the popular rest stops are. I have no complaints as being a owner operator with this GPS.

After almost a year of using this, I have come to a final conclusion that this thing sucks! Not the unit itself, but Garmin and their 'programmers' who program this thing with SUPPOSED truck routes! It AVOIDS routes that trucks ARE ALLOWED to use, and sends you down roads that trucks ARE NOT supposed to use! I use this in the northeast, mainly NY and PA, and it's all but useless outside of main interstates! I don't know why it's so hard to accurately program a GPS with truck routes but apparently it's beyond the capabilities of the geniuses at Garmin. I mean if you can't trust the leader in GPS navigation, who CAN you trust? I've had even worse results with Rand McNally. Is it that they just don't care about the northeast? Or is it this way across the whole country? I have completely lost faith in Garmin, this wasn't cheap and now I'm stuck with it. Gee, sure looks pretty though... I left my original review below, which was initially positive, but having used this for a while now, Garmin has shown their true colors, even with the latest updates!

Below is my original review. I do NOT feel this way anymore.

Let's face it, trucker GPS's primary purpose is to make money for the manufacturers. Hard truth but it is the truth. I have had many over the years including trucker navigation software for my laptop. Most have been horrible, even if used for a car! I recently used CoPilot for my cell phone, and though it seemed almost ok, it was not very easy to use and lacked many features you'd expect to be available. In 2014 I bought a Rand McNally tablet truck GPS and was highly disappointed. Then I tried a Garmin Dezl 770 with marginally acceptable results, basically, it was good enough to remind me of a turn coming up on the route that I had to 'build' to the point of just not using it anymore, the mount sucked (couldn't be tightened, wouldn't stay straight), another disappointment. I had no idea what direction to go for my next trucker GPS and did a lot of research and read and watched many reviews on the OTR Series tablet GPS units for trucks.

Most people are still saying avoid the Rand McNally's, they're still junk both in quality and functionality, which really surprises me since they publish the Bible of a Trucker Atlas. Apparently, the atlas division doesn't speak to the GPS division...

So after MUCH intense research well into the night, I decided to take a chance on the Dezl OTR1000 model.

The good: almost everything! You can now FINALLY update the thing without hooking it up to a computer! Magnetic mount (stroooong too), can use in portrait or landscape, the mount is heavy duty, well made, the unit is quite loud (many complained about this so they must have fixed the issue), the screen is amazing and it processes routes quicker than any GPS I've ever used. There's just too much to add. It works, got it this morning and spent all day (it's now 2:30 am) running it through my tests. It actually knows where to go! So far so good. I'll update this review in a month or so after I've actually used it in the truck. I love how you can send directions (I use actual coordinates copied from Google Maps) directly to the GPS in seconds.

The bad: it runs Android 6...really? 6? This means good luck finding any apps that will even download onto it. And WHAT GPS DOESN'T COME WITH A CALCULATOR? Most of us aren't mathematicians but we don't have to be, but come on man, we DO use numbers daily.

Overall, at this point, I'm very happy with it and I think it actually knows where my truck should or should not be. I'll update this later. For now, while pricey and no, I don't think any piece of plastic is worth that kind of money, I would recommend this.

I'm not exactly fond of giant screens in my windshield, neither is the DOT, so this unit was perfect. Plugged it in at home, updated it and the whole process went smoothly. I downloaded the Garmin dezl app, make sure that you don't try to use the Garmin drive app, it doesn't work with this unit, and that connected instantly too. Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities helped that process too.

As far as features, this little gem is packed. Everything you need to navigate your route with some nice touches to enhance that experience as well. There are far too many to get into here but YouTube the unit and you'll some good videos from professional drivers to help explain them.

I've used it for a week as of this writing and have nothing at all to complain about. Intuitive interface, great customization features, and directions/routing are spot-on.

All-in-all, great unit at a great price for what you get. Just one thing though, buy the Gamin dash mount for this unit. That thing that comes in the box will not withstand the vibrations and bumps that are commonplace with big trucks. You'll thank yourself later!

Why the Garmin dēzl OTR1000 is the Best GPS for Truckers

This is a great GPS and is good if you’re sick and tired of using your phone, letting it get super hot, and slowly killing it early via the heat cycles it has to endure. It’s nice to have a dedicated system that is cheaper than your smartphone, and gets the job done. There is no subscription, it just uses data already being communicated from the sats, does the math, and applies it to pre-loaded maps. That means, no service, no problem, you still have the maps locally stored, you just need “line of site” with the sats in space. Also, make sure you update 1x a year. It’s just a file you have to load. The GPS also has USBC, which is a nice modern touch. The battery doesn’t last long by itself so make sure you have an external power source at all times. UI could be a little better, but once you get used to it, it’s easy to use. Overall, I recommend it.

The voice navigation is clear, and the turn-by-turn directions have kept me on track in even the most confusing areas. I especially appreciate the speed and red light camera alerts, which have saved me from several tickets. Customized truck routing is a game-changer for planning longer trips. Highly recommend!

This is my 6th dash top Garmin GPS. I have used Garmin Nuvi's for a long time. I like this one better than all the past ones. It is very easy to use and I really like the large size. It is easy to see even in bright sunlight, way better than any of my past models. I do not use the Bluetooth function for the phone or the voice command so I cannot comment on them. It has built-in wifi so once you connect it to your home network, it will automatically download upgrades without connecting to your computer. If you have purchased custom "voice" files, like Dr. Nightmare, they provide no way to install them...at least it is not documented. You can download them to your computer and then copy them manually to the proper folder in the GPS and they will work fine.

I would recommend this GPS for anyone who wants to get from here to there with ease. It works great!!

Dislikes! I do have a few...

1. I do not like the way this model attaches to the ball mount. It take two hands to release it whereas all of my other models could be easily released with one hand and they were still very secure in their attachment.

2. I am an avid geocacher, since 2003. ALL of my past models could easily display geocaches on the screen. All you had to do was put them in a .gpx file and copy them to the proper folder in the GPS. This model does not do that very well. You can follow the same procedure but instead of getting the neat little geocaching icons on the screen, you get these big ugly icons that look like tabs or signs. I do not like this at all...big downer. But the overall good outweighs this downer. There is a "workaround". You can export your caches to a POI file and copy it to the POI folder in the GPS. All of the caches will then display on the screen using a much smaller, and less ugly icon. You can then select one and navigate to it. The upside to using POI is that you can have more of them. I easily put in over 3000. The names of each one will NOT display on the screen, but at least you can see them. If you touch one, you can navigate to it, or you can quickly find them in the menu. So.... it works well for geocaching but not quite as well as any of my older, smaller models.

3. I use LINUX on my computer, not Windows. I also have a MacBook laptop. ALL of my older model Gamins would plug into Linux or Mac and display on the screen like a disk drive. You could then drag and drop your .gpx or .poi files over to the proper folder. THIS model GPS will NOT do that.... not on a Mac and not using Linux. You MUST have WINDOWS to transfer your files. This really sucks... I had to install Windows on my desktop using dual boot just to retain my sanity. I admit I am a Windows hater. I could give you reasons but I'll spare you. So if you are a Windows hater like me, plan on being disappointed. Again, the good of this GPS outweighs ever this. It is a keeper.

4. Although this GPS is very very easy to use and easy to figure out, the documentation is poor. You might even say it sucks but not quite that bad. If you are a basic user, new to GPS, then the documentation is OK but if you want to do more complicated stuff, you just have to figure it out for yourself.

I got this when I started a pizza delivery job. I drive 75% in the city and 25% in the country (Southern Illinois).

I LOVE the subtle-ding the Garmin gives me when I hit 5mph over the speed limit (an optional feature I enabled). It also displays the speed limit in most cases.

The Voice Recognition is roughly what I expected. If I could rate the voice recognition on a 1-100 scale, I'd give it a 87. It recognizes well used streets well...but not quite as accurate on lesser known or said streets (or streets that could easily sound like something else). I always turn off the radio when I speak to allow it to hear me better. (But in most cases it can recognize with the radio on low).

The SPEED at which I speak to the Garmin is Roughly 10-15% SLOWER than the Normal/Natural rate I would use if I were talking clearly to a Person. This seems to make it easier for the Garmin to read...But it could be slightly irritating to the impatient. Also the SPEED at which the Garmin Speaks to me (after I speak to it) will say something like, "Did you say, '123 Park Street".....Then I'll reply, 'Yes'....then then Garmin will say to me, 'WIll you like to begin Navigation', then I'll say, 'Yes' then it'll Beep/Chirp and say, 'Please Drive to the Highlighted Route'....

The conversation of the paragraph above could be better....and could be worse....Once again (I only use the voice activation if I sense that it's an, "Easy' Street for it to recognize like Main Street or Park Street...not 'Chataqueaua Street' (That it mistakenly thinks I said, 'Choctaw Street' as an example)

It finds roughly 98% of the addresses I look for. Usually is it doesn't find it...its because it's a new subdivision or street. It also occasionally happens when when it's WAY out in the country.

Despite me griping about a few things...I only do so to highlght what I've noticed. Overall it not only have achieved my expectations...but it slightly exceeds it (Minus the voice activated aspect/Which I'd say it only reached my expectations)

The other thing I'll say I love...Is How/When the Garmin decides to zoom in on the screen/Zig Zag Pattern of the Road as you get CLOSER to the destination. AS you get closer to the destination the Garmin Zooms in on the REMAINING portion of the route which REALLY helps out on knowing what to expect further down the road.

My lights are about to be replaced (Older Mini-Van) BUT...If I were driving in the country (Little to No Street Lights)...It is a LIfesaver to be able to SEE/KNOW sharp curves ahead of time by looking at the Garmin.

Also...if you're in an older part of town (With a lot of one way streets)...It's nice to have an audible voice Warn you as a backup, "You are going the WRONG way down the Steet"...Haha

Things that could be better...And it could be worse:

The ability of Garmin to find the exact apartment number (In an apartment complex/Mobile Home Community).

If I could rate that on a 1-100...I'd give it only a 35. (Granted it's not something they claim to have)

A small gripe I have. I drive a GM vehicle and I have to sometimes turn the headlights on/off twice before my headlights go off...Sometimes when I do this the Garmin will say, "Say a Command" and while it's speaking it sounds like somebody pulled the plug on it WHILE it was speaking...it sounds a little harsh WHEN this happens (Which isn't ALL the time/But it DOES happen occasionally). It's not something that can't be dealt with (and isn't Too loud...but it's slightly irritating when it happens)

If Garmin could eventually master knowing all the apartment numbers/mobile home communities and on which face/side of the building they're located on...it'd make things MUCH easier though (Delivering Pizza's). Believe it or not....Sometimes it takes less time to get to an apartment complex vs finding the right building. Less people have addresses well lit/Visible on their homes/mailboxes than you'd think.

Overall I'm VERY happy with the purchase. On the rare 2% of the time I couldn't find an address....my cellphone would always get me there.

**Also, I bought the Backup Camera from Garmin** It's DIRT-Simple to install (A child/elderly person) could install it themselves unassisted. The 2 Lithium AA batteries I purchased (**NOT**-Included-by-the-Way)...lasted Roughly a month (Jan-Feb 2020).

With its 5-inch display, user-friendly menus, and advanced features like real-time traffic updates and driver alerts, the Garmin Drive 52 GPS Navigator is an exceptional tool for road travelers. Whether you're navigating busy city streets or planning a long-distance trip, this device ensures a hassle-free journey.
