I upgraded to this from a 7-year-old Garmin when the battery failed. I had fears of the usual technology gaps but this upgrade was fast and perfect. The changes in function and appearance are a big step up from the old unit. I must confess I would not have done it if the old one had not failed because we recently added a new vehicle, A Honda Ridgeline, and in comparison to that old unit its built-in GPS is an annoying mess. But what is surprising is it uses the Garmin GPS operating system. Why Garmin ever agreed to this implementation of their software and kept the Garmin name on it is a mystery; it is a mess in many respects and if this DriveSmart 65 had been anything like the Honda implementation it would have gone right back to Amazon. Thankfully it turned out to be everything and much but more than that old one. The high-level street detail mode option and the map displays are so well implemented it can really be used like a street atlas. The connection to a smartphone app for online input may be nice but I cannot depend upon it since I often travel not only out of internet contact but also phone signal contact. My Wife normally drives the Ridgeline and if I end up driving it much then I will bolt one of these units to the dash just like the Tacoma and never use that internal GPS thing.
It is so simple to use. I like the fact it can find nearby restaurants. I used it for the first time yesterday. I went to my son's house and he lives in a new housing development. This thing didn't have a clue how to find his house. The streets didn't come up at all. That problem isn't unique to just this device. I'll try to do an update to see if that works. For more established routes this thing is great. I bought a bean bag holder that sits on my dash and the GPS clips into it. I can move it to different vehicles if I need to. The bottom line is, I really like it.
What I really liked is that it shows the areas of immediate need while traveling such as rest areas, lodging and gas station locations as well as local town distances and time to destination...I found that extremely helpful. Plus, it also popped up areas of concern for road work and hazards. I like this Garmin a lot and will also update automatically when properly programmed.
